Carving out a new career …

My family has been carving wood for more than 60 years. When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time in my uncle's woodcarving workshop, back in Romania. I enjoyed working with wood more and more over the years, and started making things for my own home.

Because I was good at maths and geometry, I was pushed to take a computer operator & programing course. But, within a few years, I decided that my real ambition was to become a dental technician. However, because of lack of funds, I had to leave college, so came to Ireland, seeking a better life.

I worked in the building industry for several years. This was a great experience as I learnt a huge amount and developed a number of very useful skills, such as drylining, plastering and carpentry. Dryliners build internal walls and sometimes install removable wall partitions, raised flooring and suspended ceilings.

Acquiring these skills means that I can now combine making timber products with full room remodelling.

Back to my first love

I've returned now to my early love – working with wood, and making things. I love talking to homeowners about what they want, while also making suggestions, and then designing and making products that they're delighted with. I also love remodelling rooms, transforming dull or inefficient spaces so that they look fantastic.

As Bogdan Blaga, who was my best friend in childhood and has managed to remain my best friend, said to me once: "I may not be able to afford all the things that I want in my life, but I want to be able not to do what I don't want to do."

Well, I'm now doing something that I love doing – and I'm glad to say that my customers seem to love what I do, which is designing and making custom-made products, and remodelling and transforming rooms.

My reward is the work itself and the delight of my customers.
